First: no getting around it, set up is a pain in the *ss. It gets a little more intuitive after a few times, but it’s never easy. I didn’t have too much trouble, but there are a lot of steps. I used it with my 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD-Off-road. My truck is not lifted, but when installed, the top of the tent is easily 8’ off the ground. Tossing the rain fly over the top can be a challenge. On the trip where I used this tent we had ground tents, rooftop tents, and this one. I could set up in about the same amount of time as the ground tents, but definitely not as fast as the roof top tent.Once set up and snugged down, the tent fit well on my truck and I had no problems. I didn’t use it in rain, but we had some strong winds in the Oregon desert, and the tent held up just fine.The absolute best part of this tent is when you’re taking it all down. To be able to stand at the tailgate and roll up sleeping bag, mattress, and other gear is very handy. Then collapse the tent right into the truck bed and roll it up too. So convenient and easy & nothing is in the dirt.A couple of complaints. The door is designed so it unzips and wants to flop inside the tent. Condensation ends up right on my sleeping bag. Flipping it out over the tailgate, and you still end up scooting across the wet fabric to get in or out. If the door zipper was configured so it unzipped to the side, this may not be a problem. Secondly, the tent materials are adequate, but not particularly robust. I don’t know how many trips this tent will last before a pole splinters, or the fabric tears. The floor tub is made from the same blue tarp kind of material as most lower end tents. Sure, it’s waterproof, and arguably the toughest part of the tent, but geez it’s noisy. I kinda wish REI would make a version of this style of tent with better materials.All this being said, I am glad I bought this tent. It served me well for a week long trip from in Oregon, from Bend to the Alvord Desert… all off-road. I’m already planning another week in the desert with this tent.
